It’s been a little while since I last wrote a blog post, and honestly, I miss it, but find it so hard to find the time lately. So I thought I’d ease myself in to writing again with a little list. Here are my top 5 fictional characters of all time, the ones who have shaped me, inspired me, and who I’ve just grown to love.
Willow – Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Willow was one of my first ever favourite characters. I’ve always related to Willow, and love her transformation from shy, adorable nerd girl to badass, ultra-powerful witch, while also still remaining the cute nerd we know and love. She’s also one of my early style icons, with her array of bright colours, strange hats, and chokers.
Will Graham – Hannibal TV series
While Will Graham is an ok character in the original Hannibal Lecter books, he’s so much more interesting in Bryan Fuller’s TV show. His transformation throughout the show is fascinating and I love his complicated relationship with Hannibal. This character is a major inspiration to my own writing (not least because I may have once written some fanfic featuring Will as one of the main characters…). Margot (from the same TV series) should really get an honorable mention here, because I’m so awed by how Bryan Fuller took her character and made her so much more complex and interesting and most of all, powerful.
The Fool – Robin Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings books
The Fool is just the best. He starts off as the bizarre, confusing court jester at Buckkeep Castle where the main character, Fitz, grows up, but becomes so much more than that over the course of the story. Such an enigmatic, strange, and tragic character, who is full of surprises and who I’m full of love for. There’s not much I can say about the Fool without giving away spoilers, but if you don’t know what I’m talking about, then you have to read some Robin Hobb.
Retsuko – Aggretsuko (Aggressive Retsuko)
Retsuko is a very recent addition to this list. A red panda who is an adorable and polite model employee by day vents her anger through death metal karaoke by night. I love this show, and I love the contrast between the two different sides of Retsuko, which is oddly relatable. This show is pure genius, and at about 15 minutes per episode is something I think everyone should watch, at least once.
Keyleth – Critical Role
This is another show it was hard for me to choose a single character from, because I love them all so much. I’ve chosen Keyleth because like Willow, she’s the character I probably related to the most. I love her development throughout the series. Honourable mention to Percy and Vax, both of whom speak to different parts of my personality and have inspired my own Dungeons & Dragons characters.
I have so many favourite fictional characters, which made it so hard to write this list. I could have talked for hours about all my favourites, but one series that has to get a mention, because I’ve been enjoying it so much lately is Mad Men. The characters in Mad Men have grown so much on me since I started watching. While the first series felt a little slow to start, by series three I was completely hooked on the characters. Joan is my favourite aspirational character, while Peggy is the one I’m always rooting for. Pete is the character I love to hate, because he’s so awful that he’s actually hilarious. And then of course, there’s Don Draper, the charming villain and Roger Sterling, day-drinker extraordinaire. Simply too many characters to name.
There are also plenty of book characters I’ve completely failed to mention, but maybe that’s a blog post for another day.
